When you say, “Please do not write a novel that is actually a thinly-veiled autobiography”, I immediately think of Bukowski. He made a name for himself doing exactly that. Obviously there is no rule when it comes to what becomes popular and what does not, but I think that craft matters more than subject matter. I think of Frank McCourt, Pete Hamill and others who often write on a not-so-unique subject but write so well that you can’t help but become immersed in the story.
