Burning Man

30 Take Aways from a Burning Man Virgin

This was my first year at Burning Man. The experience was incredible and thought provoking. Here are a few of my take aways from the week:

  1. People can accomplish amazing things with their creativity.
  2. Problems, no matter how complicated, can be solved one piece at a time.
  3. Monogamous relationships can succeed here.
  4. There is no place in the world quite like the deep playa.
  5. Creative expression is important.
  6. You don’t have to do things for monetary gain, and you should do things just for yourself.
  7. Love is important. Love yourself, and love the people you are with. A loving culture is nurturing.
  8. Gifting makes people feel valuable.
  9. Everyone has an amazing story to tell. Those conversations don’t start with, “So what do you do?”
  10. Good relationships with neighbors help everyone feel secure, valuable, and important.
  11. Nudity isn’t shocking if it’s normal. You get over seeing naked people about 5 minutes after driving into the gate at Burning Man.
  12. Consent should be freely given, not an expectation.
  13. Dressing up in wild outfits is really fun.
  14. Bikes look better at night with neon lights.
  15. You cannot possibly do everything at Burning Man. This is also a metaphor for life. It’s okay.
  16. Agreements are important. If you make them, don’t break them.
  17. Your story is interesting and valuable. Tell it when it is your turn.
  18. Even in a culture of dance music and DJ’s you can find live music that suits your tastes.
  19. Self Expression is beautiful in many forms.
  20. Learning is important, and it’s not hard to do.
  21. You know more than you think and have plenty of things to teach others. So share.
  22. Love and creative expression is for everyone, not just “dirty hippies”
  23. You can live a fulfilled life without ever becoming rich.
  24. Radical self reliance is a great thing. But so is asking for help when you need it.
  25. Surround yourself with people who build you up.
  26. Take pictures. Both in your mind and with a camera.
  27. Laughter heals almost everything.
  28. There is too much to do, and you cannot possible do everything. When deciding where to go and what to do, you can’t make a wrong decision.
  29. Living in the present moment is peaceful.
  30. A little dust never hurt anyone.
